Bullet Riddled - Grant M. Whitus

Publisher: Waldorf Publishing

Published: September 2016

ISBN: 9781943276028

Grant Whitus joined the Colorado SWAT in 1992. His 17 year career was one of constant headlines. Among leading countless drug raids and hostage situations, he was on the front lines of the Columbine Massacre, the Platte County Tragedy, the Albert Petrosky shooting, and the Granby tank rampage.

Speaking for the first time, Whitus gives the unvarnished truth of those, and many other, major SWAT operations. Now retired, he opens up about his time behind the shield. Bullet Riddled is the full unabridged disclosure of what happened during his storied career; including the brutal morning of the Columbine Massacre. More than just a retelling, Bullet Riddled is an in-depth look at the day-to-day of SWAT and focuses on the men and women who inherit so much pain to keep us safe.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in the aftermath of the Columbine tragedy. The following days saw major changes within SWAT: Men cracked, leaders folded and the entire country demanded changes. But these changes, like all reforms, met with stiff resistance from the old guard. Friendships turned into rivals and the infrastructure of SWAT began to unravel. As resignations piled up, Grant rebuilt the entire team from hand-selected recruits. He finally had his elite team, one that would face new demons and disorders.

My review
First of: if you are faint of heart or do not like foul language, you better think again before reading this book. Officer Grant gives you an insight into a day in the life of a SWAT member. And what a day: you not only are taken inside of Columbine, but also at some other horrific days where brain matter is splashed across the ceiling and poor girls are shot point blank in the head. So, definitely make sure your lunch or diner is properly digested before starting this book.
Whitus is brutally honest in his autobiography. Some would say he is an arrogant jerk, and a lot of people take offence on his language and rampage on bad guys. But although you may not agree with him, the book will give you an idea what the police goes through during those kinds of shoot-outs or tragedies.
As a European I can't imagine why there are people in the United States still pro-guns after reading the tragedy at Columbine. Of course we have our share of horrible tragedies, but since we are not allowed to own a gun, these kind of situations as at Columbine are very foreign to me. To read about it (even as it is horrific) is very educative and informative. The writer takes you on a trip on memory lane, with every chapter a new phase or incident in his life. He takes you by the hand and leads you by all the tragedies step by step. He explains why they do what they do and how. And also what was changed in their working methods after each incident. It's a lot of food for thought, and no matter your opinion on officer Grant as a person, I think you can not disagree with me that this guy (with his row of honours and prizes) has been a valuable member of the police force. And next time you see or hear about a hostage situation or a shoot-out, you can relate to how the officers at the scene must feel and act. A deep bow for Grant Whitus. And four stars for Bullet Riddled.

Switching Gears - Chantele Sedgwick

Publisher: Sky Pony Press

Published: February 2017

ISBN: 9781510705067

Still mourning the loss of Lucas Nelson, the boy she loved in secret for years, seventeen-year-old Emmy Martin turns to her passion for mountain biking to try to fill the empty void in her life. But just when things start looking up, Emmy discovers her mom has been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Confused and angry that her parents didn’t tell her sooner, she throws herself into mountain biking like never before.

When Cole Evans, the rich boy who usually doesn’t care about anything but himself, offers to train her for the biggest mountain biking race of the season, she accepts, determined to beat her nemesis, Whitney, and prove she’s good enough for a sponsor. The more time she spends with Cole, the more she realizes he’s different than she’d expected, and, to her surprise, she’s falling for him. Torn between the deep feelings she still has for Lucas and her growing ones for Cole, she knows she must choose a path: one offers her the chance to love again, while the other is blocked by the overwhelming heartache for the boy she lost.

As she drifts further away from her family and closer to her dream of being sponsored, a terrible accident threatens any semblance of peace and happiness she has left. Instead of closing herself off to the people she loves, Emmy must learn to rely on those she has pushed away if she’s going to have any chance of getting her life back again.

My review
The blurb of this book made me curious. Since I'm currently working for a company in bike supplies, this book was right up my alley. Bikes, romance, drama, definitely sounds interesting. And yes, the book started of great. You are swept into the mourning of Emmy over losing her neighbour and best friend Lucas and the determination of Emmy to beat her nemesis Whitney. Chantele Sedgwick certainly knows how to describe her characters and make you feel their pain and sorrow. And of course their laughter. Kelsie, Emmy's BFF is a wonderful girl, trying to keep Emmy from sliding back into the dark feelings of depression she felt when her secret love Lucas died of cancer.

However, Em's life isn't getting on track yet. Her mother gets diagnosed with early Alzheimer's and she discovers that her parents have known this for over 6 months, before telling her and her brother Gavin. Angry, confused and sad, she tries to keep everybody at a distance. Especially Cole, her rival teamcaptain from the bike team. But Cole doesn't let her. He keeps popping up and tries to help her train and cope with her frustration.

So, Cole kind of grows on you. And that's the moment when I kind of lost the feeling with the book. Chantele did an excellent job in creating the tension between Cole and Emmy, the heartbreak of Emmy over Lucas and the banter between Kelsie and Emmy. But when the end of the book was coming nearer, the story sort of drizzled to an end. It was kind of when you bike up an enormous mountain, barely missing all kinds of obstacles, sweating all over the place and then arrive at the top of the mountain, where it's all foggy. All this hard work, and no view. So, three out of five stars from me. The climb to the top was awesome, unfortunately the view was obscured by fog.

Montreal, Quebec . . . A charming city on the St. Lawrence River, historic, sophisticated, but beneath it all lies an extensive underground where treacherous vampires are plotting to seize the country.

Lucifer Scuderi is a vampire—handsome and charismatic, a powerful hunter of unusual skill—who arrives in Montreal to take on the most important hunt of his life. Someone has kidnapped the mate of Canada’s ruling vampire lord, and it’s up to Lucifer to find him before his death sets off a crisis that could engulf the entire continent.

Eleanor Morel lost everything—including the love of her life—when she became a vampire. But now, twenty years later, she’s a trusted bodyguard to the Canadian lord, Sophia, and the only person Sophia can count on to lead the search for her endangered mate. But what Eleanor doesn’t know is that the special hunter she’ll be working with is none other than her long-lost love. And he’s demanding answers.

Lucifer’s love for Eleanor burns as hot as his anger towards her for leaving him. But they’ll have to find a way to set history aside and work together if they’re going to unravel the twisted betrayal that threatens not only Sophia and her mate, but the whole continent. Because the European vampires are on the move. And if Canada falls, the rest of North America could follow . . .

My review
Lucifer is the 11th book of the Vampires in America. I didn't know this series, but I think I will do some catching up. The cover of D.B. Reynolds book certainly got my attention. And without reading the first 10 books, this book was perfectly readable. Of course, you miss some of the history of Sophia, the Vampire lord and some basics on how those lords operate. But you catch up pretty quick, and let's face it: Lucifer is just too hot to care about all those vampire politics.
The story starts with Colin, Sophia's mate, who is being tortured. Well, you certainly have all the attention there D.B.. Then the story continues with Sophia, Eleanor and lord Aden. Lord Aden proposes that one of his vampires (Lucifer) will help Sophia tracking her mate down. Since there are a lot of traitors, it is difficult for Sophia to accept help. To be sure, she isn't being deceived, she appoints her most trusted vampire (Eleanor) to go with Lucifer. What she doesn't know is that Eleanor and Lucifer share a history. An unfinished history...

So when Lucifer and Eleanor meet, tension goes throught the roof and sparks are flying. But are those sparks enough to overcome history???
Find out during the journey of Eleanor and Lucifer to track down Colin and his abductors. Who is the traitor among Sophia's clan? And will Eleanor and Lucifer be in time to save Colin?

This book will keep you on edge. Makes you wonder what will come next and who will be the traitor. And of course the mutual attraction between Lucifer and Eleanor. Will they fold to the attraction, or has too much happened for them to make amends? Thank you ImaJinn Books and Netgalley for this ARC. Four out of five stars for me. And I'll definitely start on the rest of the series!

Weregirl - C.D. Bell

Publisher: Chooseco

Published: November 2016

ISBN: 9781937133559

Nessa Kurland is running for her life.

C. D. Bell's WEREGIRL is a fast-paced teen thriller set in Tether, Michigan, a town on the brink of shutdown since it was stripped of its resources by corporate polluter Dutch Chemical.
High school junior, Nessa Kurland, is a cross-country runner with her eyes set on one thing: a college scholarship as her one-way ticket out of Tether.
Talented teammate Cynthia Sinise invites Nessa on a nighttime run through Tether's overgrown forest trails. But she speeds ahead, leaving Nessa alone to discover a trapped wolf. Nessa tries to free the animal but is badly bitten, seemingly ruining her hopes for a strong fall season with the cross-country team.
Instead, Nessa's freakishly quick recovery is followed by improved running times. All her senses are heightened. Nessa has transformed.

She has become a werewolf.
In her new state, Nessa learns there are things about Tether that powerful people want to keep hidden. Why does a Nobel Laureate work at the small-town medical clinic? Are top college athletic scouts really interested in her emerging talent? Can she trust Chayton, the motorcycle-riding guide her friends have faith in? WEREGIRL's Nessa must navigate her junior year and true human darkness, while making peace with her new, wild nature.

My review - Part of the Weregirl BlogTour
The cover of Weregirl definitely drew my attention. Since I'm a sucker for shape-shifting characters, I was really glad a got the chance to read this first novel of C.D. Bell. The story is well build up. Nessa gets bitten by a wolf, when she tries to free him from a trap. Although you can see this coming from miles away, the unfolding of the story is a lot less predictable. The first few shifts of Nessa are pretty hilarious and especially the reaction of her best friend Bree. She is a hoot! Okay, so just don't shed your fur all over my car please? And have a cookie. C.D. Bell has done an excellent job in describing all the emotions Nessa is feeling, when she discovers she is getting more and more a werewolf. Enhanced hearing: very handy, a sharp nose: sometimes not so handy with all those smells from the chemical factory, fur all over: definitely not handy. Try keeping your furry arms and legs from discovering when it's smoking hot outside and you need to run a 5KM race. Well, that's a challenge...
But Weregirl is not only about Nessa and the changes she goes through in becoming a werewolf. Beside this is a second story, related to Nessa's young brother Nate. He is being monitored by a small medical clinic, sponsored by Dutch Chem. Not only Nate, but all young children in Tether are are being monitored. Billy Lark is also being monitored, but his mother is very suspicious. And then Billy gets sick...
What is happening to Billy and why do the wolfs try to get Nessa to check over Billies home? And what has the medical facility have to hide? C.D. has done an outstanding job in creating a story which keeps you on edge until the very end. Keep an eye out for more books of this author.
So four out of five stars from me.

About the author

When she's not biking the streets of Brooklyn, NY, you can find C. D. Bell writing in a decrepit RV clinging to the side of a hill in upstate New York, trying to teach herself to watercolor, or inventing her own recipes. She is a voracious reader of anything and everything fantasy, supernatural, or romance. And she swears that the monsters she often writes about are not real-- at least she hopes not.

Created by a talented team of six female writers and inspired by the working tradition of television writers, C. D. Bell is a Chooseco author pseudonym developed with teen author Cathleen Davitt Bell, who has written I Remember You [Knopf 2015], among other novels for young adults.
The second installment of the WEREGIRL trilogy is already in the works.
